History of Viking River Cruises AG

Viking River Cruises, a global corporation headquartered in Basel, was established in 1997 by Torstein Hagen. In the first year, the company operated with 4 ships in Russia. In 1998, the Group acquired another two ships in Germany and took over the catering company Aqua Viva in France.

In the course of time, the company was expanding very quickly and took over, among others, KD (Köln-Düsseldorf Schifffahrt) together with its whole fleet of 9 vessels. Now the company is sailing in Danube, Rhine, Main, Moselle, and French waterways in addition to Russia and Ukraine. In 2004 Viking River Cruises launched cruise ships along the Yangtze River in China and from 2006 on the Nil River.

The Viking River Cruises fleet consists of 21 ships around 1700 employees (Nautical and Catering department).

With the deployment of further newly build ships Viking River Cruises consistently guarantees a high product and young fleet. 2005, the new vessels Viking Sun and Viking Century Sky have been introduced and in 2006 the Viking Helvetia. Parallel to the fleet rejuvenation follows an extensive modernization program for the other ships.

Viking River Cruises INC., Los Angeles, is the group's sales and marketing division for the United States. Viking Flusskreuzfahrten GmbH, Cologne, is the group's sales and marketing division for Europe. The technical department, Viking Technical, is also in Basel.
